Why is it important to buy local flowers?

When you buy local, you help support small businesses and the people that are running them. By doing that, you also boost the local economy. I mean, c’mon! Who doesn’t want that, ammi right??

The US imports a staggering percentage of blooms from other countries. These flowers have been cut and shipped across the world, sometimes reaching stores/shelves days to even a week after being harvested. These flowers will thus wilt faster and not be as fragrant.

According to Columbia.co, “One reason Colombia exports so many flowers to the US is because it’s so close, just a couple of hours from Miami International Airport, which processes 187,000 tons of fresh-picked flowers every year. That’s a lot of blooms and there’s always a surge before Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day too."

Locally grown flowers are typically cut the morning that they are arranged and sold. These blooms will last longer, and there will be more variety as the environment and time of year play a big role in availability of seasonal stems.

Due to the variety of flowers that are grown, the local honey bees and insects benefit from the pollen and nectar that is provided. As we know, the honey bee population is taking a beating from pesticides used in large corporations and farms. At Golden Roots Flower Farm, we have our own honey bee hives and never use pesticides; the more natural, the better!

By buying local, you support not only me, but my family and my love of flowers. You support other small businesses that help each other. It has a ripple effect that is undeniably noticed!

We are so thankful for all of our local support!
